Broomfield Softball Claims Consecutive Class 5A State Titles

The Eagles overcame early tournament struggles to defeat Lutheran and secure their second straight state championship.

Broomfield softball has established itself as a dominant force in Colorado high school athletics, capturing its second consecutive Class 5A state championship. The Eagles defeated No. 2 seed Lutheran 6-2 in the final game held on Saturday at Aurora Sports Park. This victory marks a historic achievement, as Broomfield became the first team in the Class 5A division to repeat as state champions since Legend accomplished the feat in 2017 and 2018. The Eagles had previously claimed their inaugural title the prior year by defeating the Titans.

The path to the championship was far from smooth. On Friday, the Broomfield squad appeared vulnerable, suffering a 6-0 deficit in the second inning against Liberty and a 7-0 hole in the first inning against Columbine. Despite these early setbacks, the team mounted impressive comebacks to win both games 9-7 and 8-7, respectively. These victories allowed the Eagles to advance to Saturday's slate of games, where their confidence appeared to soar.

Head coach Kale Gilmore noted that the team's resilience was evident throughout the tournament. He described Friday as a struggle where the players felt they were on death row but found a way to survive. By Saturday, Gilmore observed that his players were loose and confident, making them feel invincible. Although he was not surprised by the final outcome, he expressed pride in the team's ability to overcome adversity and become a difficult opponent for anyone to face in the playoffs.

The Eagles' season started with a 1-6 record after losing twelve seniors from the previous year's roster. The team endured losses to Holy Family and Riverdale Ridge via mercy rule, went 1-3 in a Kansas City tournament, and lost 4-2 to Erie to open Front Range League play. Gilmore acknowledged that the team was experiencing an identity crisis early in the fall. However, as the season progressed, the players gained confidence and began to dominate, culminating in their undefeated run through the state tournament.

Senior right-hander Myah Becker was the cornerstone of the pitching staff, throwing all but four outs across the four-game state tournament. In the semifinal against top-seeded Cherokee Trail, the Eagles produced a decisive 13-2 mercy-rule victory. Senior catcher Brynlee Taga, who was named Front Range League player of the year, provided an immediate offensive spark by hitting a three-run homer in the opening inning of that game. The team recorded 11 hits while Cherokee Trail committed four errors.

In the championship game against Lutheran, a program with a rich history of success in lower classifications, Broomfield took a 3-0 lead and extended the advantage with two insurance runs in the seventh inning. Becker dominated from the circle, employing a strategy of working the outside of the plate and mixing pitches with two strikes to keep the batters off balance. The Eagles' lineup also featured strong contributions from senior second baseman Kohyn Pottorff and a group of juniors and a sophomore that provided depth.

Pottorff identified a walk-off win over Horizon on October 3 as the turning point for the team's mindset. She stated that the victory demonstrated the team's ability to stay calm under pressure and stick together. She described the team as the comeback queens, a label that stuck during the two dramatic Friday victories. The team's belief in their ability to beat anyone was evident in their performance throughout the weekend.

With many key players returning for the 2027 season, the Eagles have the potential to attempt a three-peat. The last Class 5A team to win three consecutive titles was the Legacy dynasty, which won five straight championships from 2007 to 2011. Sophomore left fielder Kennedy Oliver expressed the team's desire to continue carrying the intangibles of their recent success into next year, aiming to remain a nightmare for their opponents.
