The Badgers women's tennis team now boasts a 6-0 record, a mark that stands as the best start to a season for the program since 1992. This milestone was secured on Saturday through a pair of decisive victories in a doubleheader event.
Wisconsin defeated both Bradley and Green Bay with identical final scores of 7-0. The consistency of the results highlights the team's current form, as they shut out each opponent completely. This performance solidifies their position at the top of their respective standings heading into the next phase of the competitive calendar.
The second match of the day featured Green Bay, who entered the competition with a reduced roster. The visitors had only five players available to field a full lineup. This numerical disadvantage appeared to limit their ability to compete effectively against the well-rounded Badgers squad.
Wisconsin established early dominance in the doubles matches that set the stage for the singles events. The opening doubles pair of freshman MaryAnn Rompf and senior Kelsey Grambeau defeated Theresa Tebon and Tallie Piaskowski with a score of 6-1. This early victory helped build confidence for the remainder of the day's play.
The Badgers maintained their offensive pressure in the second doubles match. Sophomore Melissa Pick and freshman Lexi Keberle secured a 6-0 win over Maria Neff and Samm Pedersen. The clean sweep in the doubles rotation gave Wisconsin a significant psychological and strategic advantage before the singles matches began.
The momentum from the doubles matches translated seamlessly into the singles competition. Notably, no Wisconsin player dropped a single set during their individual matches. Lexi Keberle, playing in the first singles position, defeated Tebon with scores of 6-1 and 6-1. Keberle has now gone unbeaten in both singles and doubles, accumulating a combined record of 7-0 for the season.
The remaining singles matches followed a similar pattern of control and precision. Rompf defeated Piaskowski 6-3 and 6-1 in the second position. Michelle Linden won her match at third singles against Sterre Tijssens with a 6-1, 6-0 scoreline. Pick completed her day by shutting out Neff 6-0 and 6-0 in the fourth position.
Christina Zordani concluded the Badgers' sweep at fifth singles. She defeated Pedersen with scores of 6-0 and 6-1. This victory improved Zordani's individual singles record to 5-0 for the current season. The team's collective effort resulted in a perfect scorecard that left little room for controversy or doubt.
Head coach Kelcy McKenna attributed the team's success to their focus on controllable factors. She emphasized that the players excelled in their attitude, effort, and energy levels. McKenna described these three elements as extremely important to the program's overall success and long-term development.
Despite the perfect record, McKenna identified specific areas that require refinement as the season progresses. She noted that the team needs to improve its doubles play, particularly regarding serves, returns, and the ability to be the first team to become aggressive. She also stressed the importance of hitting specific spots during service plays to maintain control.
The coach further explained the need to carry momentum from the doubles point into the singles matches. She urged the team to remain gritty and avoid giving away free points when they hold a lead. This focus on detail is intended to prepare the squad for the upcoming National Team Indoor Championship.
Wisconsin is scheduled to host that championship from Feb. 9 to 12. The team will look to extend its unbeaten start during that event. The focus remains on executing the little things correctly in practice and daily drills to ensure readiness for the spring season.
The upcoming indoor tournament represents the next major test for the Badgers. Maintaining the level of performance seen on Saturday will be crucial for continuing the winning streak. The coaching staff is committed to managing the details of preparation as the team moves toward the next competitive window.
